Let’s Try New Things Lesson Plan

What We Are Learning

Social and Emotional Learning:
trying new things

Group Discussion:
critical thinking

Language:
vocabulary/visual discrimination

  • Trying new things can be anxiety provoking for children. Show them how fun new experiences can be by reading Sergio Makes a Splash by Edel Rodriguez. They can try new things at school, just like Sergio! Then read the issue to get them excited about new things that they can do at school. text pairing

Art: Friendship Process Art

Materials: butcher paper or large piece of oaktag, paint

  • This activity encourages children to interact and bond with new friends.
  • Roll out butcher paper or lay out a piece of oaktag big enough for a group of children to gather around. Put out paint for children to finger-paint with. Then let them get to work! The messiness and excitement of painting together will help lay the foundation for new friendships. When children are done, hang the painting in the classroom to show what they’re able to do with their new friends. cooperation/ classroom community
Example of a chart

Materials: oaktag, stickers, markers

  • Celebrate all of the new things that children are trying at school!
  • Create a graph that shows the days of the week. Once a day (e.g., during closing circle), ask children if they tried something new that day. If they did, have them put a sticker on the chart under that day. If your class is able to count the number of stickers for each day, have them do so together.
  • Repeat this activity once a day for a week. At the end of the week, ask children which column has the most stickers. That’s the day they tried the most new things at school! Congratulate them for being adventurous big kids! Will they try more new things next week? counting/graphing
